Restorative Care

Baby Brushing TeethBaby teeth serve the important function of eating, speech, and esthetics (self image). These teeth not only help form the developing jaws, but they hold space for the permanent teeth so that a normal bite occurs. The last baby tooth falls out at about twelve years of age. A decayed baby tooth can become so badly decayed that it can do damage to the permanent tooth. At times severe infections of the face, head, and neck can be caused by infected baby teeth. So it is important to restore baby teeth as soon as decay is first detected.

Teeth with dental decay can be restored either with amalgam (silver) or tooth colored fillings. If the decay is extensive it will require the restoration with a crown.

Restorative Visit

Fun Shows for Kids at Our Pediatric Dentist OfficeYou can help us make this visit a successful and positive experience for your child. The procedure will be explained to your child before the procedure is performed. Happy gas (N2O) is used along with a local anesthetic (Novacain) . Child friendly and age appropriate words such as brush, spray, asleep will be used instead of negative words like needle, shot, or pull.

Although you as an adult may have had poor experiences at the dentist, please say only nice or encouraging words about the dentist. We also have chair side tvs for each child to enjoy during his/her appointment!

Child with Orthodontic BracesYES, we also do braces. (Orthodontics) and have been doing it for over 30 years. Drs. Ron and Lynn Collins have had extensive training in orthodontics. It's nice to have comprehensive care at our office - family dentistry and braces all in one location.

We believe that most children benefit from braces once. This means that we usually wait for the baby teeth to come out and the permanent teeth to come in before we get started. Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitroux Oxide (Laughing Gas)Some children are given nitrous oxide/oxygen, or what you may know as laughing gas, to relax them for their dental treatment. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a blend of two gases, oxygen and nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is given through a small breathing mask which is placed over the child’s nose, allowing them to relax, but without putting them to sleep. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recognizes this technique as a very safe, effective technique to use for treating children’s dental needs. The gas is mild, easily taken, then with normal breathing, it is quickly eliminated from the body. It is non-addictive. While inhaling nitrous oxide/oxygen, your child remains fully conscious and keeps all natural reflexes.

Prior to your appointment:

  • Please inform us of any change to your child’s health and/or medical condition.
  • Tell us about any respiratory condition that makes breathing through the nose difficult for your child. It may limit the effectiveness of the nitrous oxide/oxygen.
  • Let us know if your child is taking any medication on the day of the appointment.

Dental Radiographs

Adult and Pediatric Dentistry - Dental RadiographsOur office utilizes modern digital x-rays, not film x-rays. This means that a tiny sensor is placed gently in the mouth and the x-ray image 'pops' immediately on the computer screen. Kids are encouraged to make a 'puzzle' on the screen. Kids really get excited as we show them how we can zoom in, enlarge and colorize the pictures! Little does the child know that this method utilizes at least 60% less radiation than the old chemical kind.

Intra-oral Camera

This wonderful new technology allows you to relax in your chair while simultaneously observing a real-time pictures of the inside of your mouth magnified beyond normal size on an adjacent computer monitor! Not only does this make it simple to see and understand what the doctor is telling you, but it makes it simple for us to keep incredibly accurate records from one visit to the next.

Sterilization and Patient Safety

Patient Safety in the Dental OfficeOur office uses state of the art sterilization to ensure patient safety. Sterilization and disinfection are the basic steps in instrument processing and surface asepsis. We use rapid steam autoclaves. Our in- house infection control officer monitors the sterilization process with biological, chemical and mechanical indicators.
